Barely a year old, FitZone Nation is already taking Utah's gym scene by storm with workouts aimed at giving clients "Biggest Loser"-like results. Trainer Neil Anderson helped FitZone Nation founders Chris Armstrong and Darin Toone develop the FitZone Nation Method, which focuses on what Anderson calls "optimal health," aka mastering the 10 aspects of fitness (cardio, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, coordination, balance and accuracy).

A Different Kind of Bootcamp
Posted by Annie Whittaker on July 14, 2009
The summer months not only herald the arrival of the drama of off-season draft picks and trade rumours within the NBA, they also portend an opportunity to become part of a very integral segment of the Utah Jazz community.
Last week I spent some time at the JazzFIT Bootcamp, offered by the Nu Skin Utah Jazz Dancers. This is the first year they’ve held the official event designed to get people in shape and ready for tryouts for the Nu Skin dance squad. It was also designed to give prospective dancers an idea of what might be expected of them if they decide to try-out.
Actually, I have to tell you that I was invited not only to attend, but to participate. The bootcamp was open to everyone, not just prospective dancers. Unfortunately due to work commitments I wasn’t able to participate in the 2-a-day, 2 hour long sessions, 6 days in a row. But, lets be honest, when I showed up one of the evenings, I thought it best to leave the large chocolate chip shake and fries in the car before I climbed up the hillside to watch the workout sessions taking place. What I witnessed was half of the 42 participants on a football practice field, holding heavy metal bars over their heads while doing step squats. They were to hold those postions until the other half of the women ran a certain number of laps around the field (many). Then the groups switched and each group took over the activity of the other group. This was just the beginning. I wish I could describe the intensity of the workouts. I can tell you this, when I was an athletic trainer, I witnessed conditioning sessions for college athletes for many sports. This bootcamp was just as intense if not more so than those for collegiate sports.
The workouts were led by Neil Anderson of FitZone in Bountiful, UT who is the personal trainer for the Nu Skin Dancers, and Dancer instructor Jan Whittaker. After each of the crazy intense workout sessions, the participants learned a new dance routine. Imagine working out that hard for two hours, and then trying to learn a technically difficult routine. I was so impressed by the women in this camp. Neil and I stood stunned on the side of the dance floor while Crystal (Jazz Dancer Captain) taught and led the group in the new dance routine. He and I were lost after the first three moves. Nobody else had that problem, including the amazing 48 year old Shelley.
If you missed the bootcamp, you can still try-out for the dance squad. Tryouts will begin on Saturday Aug 1st, 2009 at the Zions Bank Basketball Center. You may preregister on line– here is the link.
Prep classes are also being held July 22nd and 28th at the Zions Bank facility. These classes are not required but very highly recommended. Prospective dancers are trying out for a professional dance team. Requirements include being at least 18 yrs old by Aug 1st 2009, and being a high school graduate. A 5 X 7 full body photo of your athletic physique is required and here’s a hint–do not bring a photo of you with your BFF, your boyfriend, or any one else, just you.
Who knows? If you make the squad you might be able to do fun things like go on the Adidas United 5 on 5 tour of Europe and be treated like a rock star. In fact, 6 of the Nu Skin Jazz Dance team and their coach went all over Europe and performed on the Spanish version of “So You Think You Can Dance,” La Fama. They had a great time. Maybe you could do the same next year, not to mention performing at all the Jazz home games and being involved in many community events. If you’re a dancer or if you know one, August 1st, 2009 is the day you need to remember.
